French Fries or Onion Rings?

Published January 2nd, 2019 by Todd Estrem

If you had to choose between French fries or onion rings right this second, which would you go for? Maybe French fries are your obvious answer. Or maybe it's onion rings — duh! But perhaps it's not such a simple decision. Could it be that you enjoy both equally?

So, again, if this was your last meal, would you go with onion rings or French fries?

A few weeks ago, we ran a poll on our Facebook page to find out the favorite. Here are the results:

As you can see, onion rings reigned supreme with a final vote of 87-58. But it was a close battle! That's why we've decided to rehash this food showdown. Here are all the pros and cons for each kind of side order that we could think of.

Taste

Pros and Cons of French Fries

We don't have to tell you that fried potatoes are among the most delicious delicacies known to man. You already know that! But it's all in the dipping sauce. We're sad to say it, but naked French fries aren't always the best. This makes an exceptional dipping sauce a must-have.

Pros and Cons of Onion Rings

Onion rings make fireworks go off in your mouth. The way the tangy onion mixes with the crisp, mouth-watering outer covering truly makes for a culinary experience you will never forget. Ever. We honestly can't think of a con. Unless, of course, you dislike onions. That's a big one.

Nutrition

Pros and Cons of French Fries

Don't quote us on this, but French fries might be one of the healthiest food options out there — especially when it comes to bone health. Did you know that potatoes contain elements like phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron? In other words, this side order helps build and maintain bone strength and structure. Eating fries is basically the equivalent of taking your vitamins. We're just saying.

Unfortunately, the oil that French fries are cooked in often adds extra fat and calories to this side order. But pay no attention to that. Just keep reading.

Pros and Cons of Onion Rings

Ah, the glorious onion ring. Did you know that onions have been found to reduce cancer (when paired with turmeric), lower glucose levels in people with diabetes, and can actually enhance our oral health? Yeah — they're essentially medicine!

On the flip side, all that fried batter may leave your stomach feeling a little heavy. But with all the superfood-like health benefits they possess, it's well worth it.

Convenience

Pros and Cons of French Fries

You can find good fries just about anywhere. They're also shareable and easy to consume without making a huge mess. But if you wait too long to eat them, get ready to consume floppy, band-aid-like tots.

Pros and Cons of Onion Rings

Onion rings are harder to find, but that makes them all the more special. They may be harder to share, but that means more for you! It also won't be the end of the world if you wait a few minutes to eat your onion rings. The biggest inconvenience with this food item is the fact that they disappear as you eat them.

And the Winner Is...

Drum roll, please!

At Tasty Pizza, our onion rings are a customer favorite. You just can't beat that soft inner sweetness of the onions combined with the light, crispy outer shell. Yum! Plus, the onions make them healthy! Of course, french fries come in at a close second. But for now, onion rings are number-one in Minneapolis.
