Free Family-Friendly Things to Do this Summer

As a parent, you may have trouble thinking of fun things to do with your whole family during the summer. It’s even more challenging to find activities that are affordable, let alone free. Fortunately, there are many Twin Cities family events and attractions that will keep kids of all ages entertained and engaged.

Minneapolis and Saint Paul Free Family Events

Minneapolis family events and those in its sister city range from the purely entertaining to educational. Whether you want your kids to get some exercise, enjoy music or learn new things, you can always find something to do with your family in the Twin Cities.

Here are some Twin Cities family events and attractions you won’t want to miss this summer.

The Cathedral of St. Paul

This European-style cathedral will take your breath away with its architectural beauty. The cathedral overlooks downtown St. Paul, which shimmers in the evening and nighttime hours. You’re welcome to visit the cathedral for free as long as a service isn’t taking place.

First Thursdays in the Arts District

This ongoing event involves about 200 artists in various genres who open their studios in the Northrup King Building to members of the public for a fee. This gives you and your family the chance to see original paintings, sculptures, prints and textiles at no charge.

Music in the Park

Every summer, Minneapolis and Saint Paul put on free concerts in city parks. You can even see movies, theatrical performances and puppet shows at various parks located throughout the Twin Cities during the summer. In Minneapolis alone last year, there were more than 250 concerts and movies at venues including:
• Lake Harriet Bandshell
• Minnehaha Park
• Father Hennepin Bluff Park
• Bryant Square Park
• Nicollet Island Amphitheater
• Theodore Wirth Park

NWA History Centre

If you remember Northwest Airlines and want your kids to learn about the airline industry before Delta bought NWA and other airlines were absorbed by today’s aviation giants, visit the NWA History Centre. Admission to the NWA Centre is free as the organization sells memberships, books, and merchandise, and collects donations to cover its operating expenses.
The goal of the NWA Centre is to preserve NWA’s history as well as the history of the aviation industry. When you visit the NWA Centre, your family will see plane models from NWA’s humble beginnings in 1926 as well as artifacts, pictures, and historical documents.
